Aoun Asserts to US Lebanon’s Commitment to Implement UN Resolution 1701
US Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Robert Story Karem expressed his country’s concern over Iran’s role in the region, a source following up on the official’s visit to Lebanon told Asharq Al-Awsat.

Fears of More Violence As Pakistan Election Looms
A week of bombings on political rallies has shattered the relative peace of Pakistan’s general election campaign, culminating in a devastating suicide attack that killed at least 130 people at a rally in the southwestern Baluchistan province.

Russia Negotiates with Opposition to Reach a ‘Settlement’ in South Syria
The Russian Army and a Syrian opposition delegation have discussed ways to restore a ceasefire in southern Syria and reach an agreement, several sources told Asharq Al-Awsat on Friday.
A Jordanian official source told Reuters there were confirmed reports of a ceasefire in southern Syria that would lead to “reconciliation” between opposition and regime forces.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also said several meetings were held in a number of towns in Daraa province on Friday between Russian officers and the Syrian opposition to discuss a possible ceasefire.

Hodeidah Governor al-Hassan al-Taher told Asharq Al-Awsat on Thursday that Yemen’s National Army, currently on the outskirts of Hodeidah, plan to besiege the city and leave a passage for militias to escape.
Al-Taher said Army personnel were rapidly moving closer to Hodeidah, as they plan to besiege the city from the southern and southeastern sides by closing the road leading to Bajel.

Libyan Counter-Terrorism Chief Sacked after Benghazi Bombing
Interior Minister of Libya’s Tubrok-based government Ibrahim Boushnaf sacked on Friday counter-terrorism chief Adel Marfoua in wake of a Banghazi bombing that left at least seven people dead.
Boushnaf told Libya al-Hadath television that a terrorist cell may have exploited some shortcomings that allowed it to carry out the attack in a residential part of the city on Thursday.
The error may have been in implementing the security plan, not the plan itself, he continued.
Benghazi is being targeted over its war against terrorism and after terrorists were expelled from the city, he added.

Missile Attacks on Military Airport, Iran-Backed Militias in Syria
Syrian pro-regime news outlets said Thursday that the Dabba airport near the city of Homs came under attack but missiles were intercepted by air defense systems before reaching their target.
“One of our military airports in the central region was exposed to a hostile missile attack, and our air defense systems confronted the attack and prevented it from achieving its aim,” state news agency SANA said.
The agency had reported earlier that sounds of explosions were heard near the airport.
