Internal, Foreign Obstacles to Lebanon’s Government Formation

Issues linked to the normalization of relations with the Syrian regime were seen this week as the main foreign obstacles hindering the formation of the Lebanese government.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri said some parties have demanded to include the normalization of ties with the regime of Bashar Assad in the policy statement as a precondition for the formation of the cabinet.

“Then the government will not be formed,” Hariri warned.

Trump Is Making Trade Less Fair

From the beginning of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, he has said he wants to make trade “fair.” For too long, he argued, American companies and workers suffered as trading partners used tactics that stole jobs, damaged U.S. industry and widened deficits. The implication was that he’d work to strip away the remaining tariffs and other hurdles that tilted the playing field.

Now we’ve seen Trump’s policy in action, it turns out he’s doing the opposite. https://ift.tt/1p5TKH4 http://bit.ly/2DOz6Vx

Lebanese Parliament to Elect Berri as Speaker for a New Term

The newly elected Lebanese parliament will hold its first session on Wednesday to elect the house speaker, who is expected to be Nabih Berri, and a deputy speaker, while the attention is actually focused on the formation of the next government.

In the absence of competition for the speaker’s position, Berri is expected to receive more than the 90 votes he received in the previous elections, during which he did not win the support of the Reform and Change bloc, then headed by President Michel Aoun and currently known as “Strong Lebanon.”

Berri has occupied this position since 1992.
