Egypt’s Antiquities Ministry said Sunday that archaeologists have discovered a statue of a lion’s body and a human head in the southern city of Aswan.

The ministry said the sphinx made of sandstone was found in the temple of Kom Ombo during work to protect the site from groundwater.

Mostafa Waziri, the secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said the statue probably dates back to the Ptolemaic time.

The Yemeni national army captured a number of villages and positions in southern Hodeidah from the Iran-backed Houthi militias, as battles intensified between them in the vicinity of the Kilo 16 area at the eastern entrance of Hodeidah city.

Yemen’s National Army forces have made further advances at the Marran front of Saada governorate, the main stronghold of Houthi militias, as part of preparations for its full liberation.

A military source said that during the clashes, about 400 Houthis were killed and injured in Marran.

Military website “SeptemberNet” reported that in the past two days, militants have launched five attacks to retrieve strategic sites which they had lost during previous battles.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is strongly intervening to prevent the imposition of the “Iranian choice” in the formation of Iraq’s largest parliamentary bloc.

After a phone call between Pompeo and former President of the Kurdistan Region and head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party Masud Barzani, the State Department announced that the Pompeo also held similar phone calls with outgoing Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and Vice President Ayad Allawi.

نددت وكالة الأمم المتحدة لغوث وتشغيل اللاجئين الفلسطينيين (أونروا) بقرار واشنطن قطع المعونة عنها، رافضة الانتقادات الأميركية الموجهة إليها، بحسب ما أفاد المتحدث باسمها ليل أمس (الجمعة).
وكتب المتحدث باسم «الأونروا» كريس غونيس على «تويتر» أن الوكالة «تعرب عن أسفها العميق وخيبة أملها لإعلان الولايات المتحدة أنها ستتوقف عن توفير التمويل للوكالة بعد عقود من الدعم السياسي والمالي الثابت».
